    Kinderbijslag what is it?

Kinderbijslag is a benefit granted to families who are raising children and working in the Netherlands on the basis of legal employment. Interestingly, both Dutch and foreigners can receive the benefit. All that matters is that there is employment in the Netherlands. The aim of this family-friendly programme is to support families in raising their children and to cover the associated costs. The money can therefore be used to buy clothes, teaching materials, provide leisure or extra-curricular activities. The applicant can collect it until the child reaches the age of 18.

According to the regulations, Kinderbijslag is granted:

    • biological parents,
    • legal guardians of adopted children,
    • foster families,
    • guardians and parents of stepchildren and children raised as their own.

How much is child benefit in the Netherlands?

The institution that deals with the granting and payment of child benefit in the Netherlands is the SVB. This is where you should address your application documents. How much is the family allowance in the Netherlands in 2023? Currently, the benefit rates are as follows:

    • children up to 6 years – €269.76,
    • children from 6 to 12 years – €327.56,
    • children from 12 to 18 years – €385.37.

The amounts mentioned are paid quarterly rather than monthly. The amount of the allowance depends on the age of the child, which I am sure everyone understands, as every parent knows that the needs of children increase from year to year.

Family allowance doubled with high care costs

Kinderbijslag in the Netherlands can be doubled in certain cases. If your child lives in the family home, but needs special care due to illness or disease, you can apply to the Child Benefit Centre. If your child lives in the family home, but needs special care due to an illness or disease, you can apply to the Centre for the Assessment of Care Needs (Centrum Indicatiestelling Zorg, CIZ) for a certificate that will allow you to receive additional child benefit.

In order to receive the extra care allowance for a child in need of extra care, a form must be filled in, in which it is necessary to include information on the child’s illness and housing conditions. When examining the application, the CIZ focuses on 10 main issues, awarding a certain number of points for each – the sum of these points determines whether the ruling is positive or negative. It may also require the opinion of third parties involved in the child’s care, such as a carer or specialist doctor.

Family allowance doubled for a child living away from the family home

We have the possibility to receive child benefit in the Netherlands at double the amount also if the child lives away from the family home. This can be the case if the child is studying at a university far from the family home, in which case the sum of visits to the child must not exceed a set amount (less than 46 days per quarter) and the cost of living for such a stay is at least €1,167 per quarter.

This is also possible if the child is in care due to illness or disability. This also applies if you have been in hospital for more than six months or if it is known from the start that such a stay will extend to at least six months – in this situation you may be entitled to family allowance at an increased value.

    What is a Kindgebonden budget?

Kindgebonden budget is a monthly supplement to child benefit, the amount of which depends on the income earned by the child’s parents/guardians. Kindgebonden budget can be paid monthly by the Dutch tax office or together with Kinderbijslag child benefit as one larger amount.

How much is the family allowance in the Netherlands?

If you have one child, the maximum amount of the child benefit supplement is €1220 per year. For two children it is €2226 and for three children it is €3323. In most cases the Kindgebonden budget is paid automatically, i.e. without having to apply.

Single parents can expect more financial support, as much as €375, or €3285 per year, for two children it is €467 per month and €5604 per year.

Family allowance in the Netherlands versus family benefit in the country of residence

EU law has clear rules regarding family allowances for taxpayers. You can only receive one such benefit – so if you receive child benefit in your country of residence (EU/EER) you will not receive another child benefit in the Netherlands.

Everyone who is legally employed in the Netherlands is entitled to child benefit (Kinderbijslag). Complications begin when you are also entitled to child benefit in your country of residence (your country of origin, e.g. Poland). In this case, you can only receive child benefit from one country, from the other you will receive the difference payment, the so called differential benefit. In addition, if you work in the Netherlands, you are entitled to a supplement to your child benefit, which is called Kindgebonden budget.

Child’s family allowance in the Netherlands – different registered address

In order to be granted the Dutch family allowance, it is necessary for the child and the parent to reside at the same address, but the Dutch social security establishment provides for certain concessions in this respect. If the child is not registered at the same place as the person applying for the family, it must be proven that the full amount of the allowance is transferred to the child. In order to do this, we must carefully document that all the money is being transferred to the child. This can be done by providing the relevant forms in the form of an account statement with proof of transfers or invoices and receipts for the purchase of items for the child.

Child benefit Netherlands 2023 – what documents?

If you are working in the Netherlands and want to apply for child benefit in the Netherlands, you should prepare the relevant documents to accompany your application for child benefit. These mainly include:
