BKR – Credit report from the Netherlands

If you live and work in the Netherlands and want to take out a loan for a house or car, you will certainly be checked with the credit reference bureau. Any company that offers instalment sales in the Netherlands must report this to the BKR. The information goes into a nationwide database that allows lenders to check a potential customer’s liability history. If you need a BKR report from the Netherlands, please contact us!

What is in the BKR and what is not?

BKR holds data on the following loans:

    • credit cards issued by banks,
    • auto loans,
    • repayment of telephone subscriptions,
    • mortgages,
    • loans for entrepreneurs.

However, when it comes to what you won’t find in BKR this:

    • tax arrears
    • debts to energy suppliers,
    • rent debts,
    • zaległości w opłaci składek zdrowotnych,
    • pożyczki studenckie i kredyty hipoteczne bez zaległości.

    Mortgage and BKR

An entry in the information database only appears in the case of a mortgage if you fail to pay three monthly instalments. Importantly, once the arrears have been cleared, a report will appear in the BKR, but your entry will appear for five years. This may affect your taking out future loan commitments.

    EU country mortgage vs BKR

Contact your local bank and ask if they grant mortgages based on Dutch employment contracts. Remember that your local bank will require a statement from the from the Dutch BKR. When applying for a loan, it is important to bear in mind that the procedure takes up to 3-4 weeks for those without a bank account in the Netherlands. In addition, time should be set aside to have the document translated by a sworn translator.

    Telephone subscription vs BKR

If you have bought a smartphone on a subscription, it is treated as an ordinary loan. The operator is therefore obliged to report the sale to the BKR (if the device is more expensive than €250).

    Credit card vs BKR

A credit card is treated as revolving credit and, according to Dutch law, must be reported to the BKR database. This happens when the outstanding credit amounts to €250 and the delay in repayment lasts more than one month.

How do I check the BKR in the Netherlands?

If you want to check whether there are entries about you in the Dutch credit information database, the easiest way to do this is through your bank in the Netherlands, the status can also be checked by correspondence. The presence of an entry in the database is a sign to lenders that you are a difficult customer and there is a risk that you will default on your debts. You can check your creditworthiness on the BKR website.
